Summer Library Book Haul -Gothic Thrillers & French Historical Fiction-
Hi bookworms! Welcome back to a Summer Library Book Haul! I've got some really interesting books to share with yall so let's get into it!
The first book I checked out is Tripping Arcadia by Kit Mayquist. This is described as a gothic thriller set in Boston featuring an old money wealthy family. The main character is a young woman who is working as an assistant to the family's personal doctor. She discovers unsavory things about this family, including a connection to her own family's demise. The need for revenge grows in her mind and things begin to unravel, going on from there. I am in the middle of this book and am loving it! The settings are lovely, the family dastardly interesting, and the herbology and botany fascinating. I'll do a full review when finished!
The second book I checked out is Goddess by Kelly Gardiner. This is a historical fiction novel set in the late 1600's France and follows the short but extremely exciting life of Julie D'Aubigny. She was a fencer, a runaway, a mistress, an adventurer, an opera singer and star. She had a multitude of lovers both men and women. She was extraordinary. I'm also halfway through this book and I love Julie so much! She's so spunky and fierce and independent. Full review to come.
The third book is Catherine House by Elisabeth Thomas. I've had this on my list for ages and while I have barely started it, I'm enjoying it so far. It's also described as a gothic thriller; the setting is an exclusive and luxurious mix between a high school and university. For three years students (the ones that are rarely accepted at least) are secluded and isolated in this Catherine House, dedicating their lives to learning and education. Presidents, artists, poets, doctors, scientists, Supreme Court justices have come from there, so the exclusivity reigns supreme. Our main character is Ines and she isn't taking the school as seriously as she should. She is, however, running from her past and something terrible she did. I'm very excited to delve into this further and see just what did Ines do and why is the school so secretive?
The last book I checked out is My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh. All I know about this book is that a lot of people I watch on BookTube have read it several years ago. It features a main character dealing with what seems like depression at the very least and isolating themselves from the world. I don't know much more than that, but I'm hoping it's a sympathetic portrayal of mental illness with hopefully a positive ending. I will let you bookworms know in the future with a review!
That concludes my haul! I apologize for my absence, I was trying out Wordpress for my blog but did not like it nearly as much as Blogger. So, I am back and ready to read and ramble! As well as do some lifestyle and diary posts! I am very happy to be back and I thank you all for your patience and support! Happy Reading and until next time!
