1 Star Review & Rant About The Trophy Wife
Okay, I'm just going to get right into my rant about this book: The Trophy Wife by Sunday Tomassetti, otherwise known as Minka Kent. I gave it one star and I'm going to talk about spoilers in the book. Let's get into it! *Trigger Warnings for mental illness, specifically DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder)*
This is a lazily written thriller about a poor woman named Cate becoming "friends" with a rich woman named Odessa. Long story short, Odessa isn't really rich or named Odessa. She's actually the daughter of a rich couple and apparently has DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder, previously known as Split Personality Disorder). She is also a violent murderer and we see a look inside her mind at the very end, where she is portrayed as apathetic, uncaring, and evil.
I hated this book. I'll be honest, it had me devouring it until THAT plot twist. The plot twist of using a mental illness to create a villain and further stigmatize mental illness!!! It absolutely disgusted me and enraged me. I am SO sick of writers using mental illness as a plot device, a way to demonize a character, or to lazily write an ending with an unreliable narrator.
DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder) is a mental illness brought about from trauma. People who suffer from it are NOT evil, murderers, or violent. They are worthy of respect and common decency. Enough of the mental illness stigma and villainization of the mentally ill. In fact, if you look at statistics, the rate of domestic violence AGAINST mentally ill people skyrockets compared to non-mentally ill.
I was very disappointed in the author after I read this and I hope no one will bother reading this nonsense. I want this kind of writing to stop, it's rather prevalent in thrillers and horror books. I know that writers can do much better than this!
That concludes my rant and half hearted review. Just don't bother reading this book. I'd give it 0 stars if I could, but it did enthrall me until the plot twist.
