Book Review of The Center of the Universe
Hey bookworms! I actually and finally finished a book today, go me! Here's my review of The Center of the Universe by Ria Voros.
This is a young adult contemporary novel about a young woman named Grace and her journey through a difficult time. Grace's mother GG goes missing and the book is about how Grace deals with her mother's disappearance, their rocky relationship, and the aftermath. I don't want to give too much away so I'll leave it at that.
This book took a darker turn than I was expecting and it was much heavier and more sad than I was prepared for. So, if you're not in the right frame of mind for that, please be aware. I found Grace's character to be a little distant. I didn't really connect with her. But that could be because she was going through a traumatic time. I did love the theme of astronomy throughout the book. That was one of my fave classes in college and it's so fascinating. The author did a great job incorporating that into the book.
I liked Grace's friendships and how they were always there for her. I especially liked Mylo's character because he had a lot of depth for a side character and I felt sympathy for him. I loved the setting in Canada; I don't read too many Canadian setting books so that was cool and refreshing. GG, the mom, made me sad and sympathetic to her, she was a broken woman throughout the book. I think that's why this book was so hard hitting, usually parents in books (and real life) are portrayed as these strong, caring, and undefeatable people, but to see a woman who maybe has struggles being a mother is very different to read about. That was an interesting take and I appreciated reading that.
It took me awhile to get through the book, even though when I did read it, it went by fast. There were some lulls and boring parts and I think it was a bit longer than it needed to be. But overall, it was a good read, an interesting read, and made me think. I appreciate that in a book. I would definitely read something by Ria Voros again. I'm giving this 3/5 stars!
