Lady Midnight Thoughts & GoT Battle of Winterfell Reaction *SPOILERS*
Happy Wednesday everyone! Can't believe its May, this Spring has flown on by! So, I have two fun topics to talk about today! I finally finished Lady Midnight, so I'm going to give my thoughts on it. And last night was the Battle of Winterfell episode and omg if you're a GoT fan, you know how intense it was. I nearly had a heart attack! I'm going to talk about my thoughts on that episode.
First up, Lady Midnight! Now, I'll be honest, I wasn't sure if I was going to like this book. It's contemporary and it took me quite awhile to learn everyone's name and get reacquainted with the Shadowhunter world. But once I did, I felt like I was back home and I sped through the book. Cassandra Clare is SO good at writing romance and I'm loving how she's writing Emma and Julian's dangerous love and forced partnership (as parabatais). I loved the setting of Los Angeles and the ocean, as well as the desert. I loved Julian's brother and sisters, they're all so cute and funny in their own little ways. I LOVED Arthur's storyline and explanation for why he is the way he is. I won't spoil anything, but I thought Cassandra Clare handled that really well. I really love Mark's character and his otherworldly personality. I'm giving this 4 out of 5 stars, just because it took me so long to get into the book, but once I did, I loved it :)
Now for Game of Thrones. First of all, I'm in the minority in this, but I loved the dark and smoky cinematography. It made me feel like I was in the battle with everyone trying to see in the dark with smoke in the air. I loved seeing Melisandre calmly return right as the battle is about to start. Seeing her light up the Dothraki's swords was so cool, but that feeling quickly faded away when the Dothrakis all died and disappeared within 5 seconds of galloping towards the undead army. I screamed when the whitewalkers swarmed and trampled the Winterfell army. It was like a tidal wave!!! Seeing everyone try to fight in the midst of that was insane; it felt so claustrophobic. I was cheering Jaime and Brienne on and my heart was in my throat that they'd die. Seeing Melisandre light up the trench was badass as well, and expounding on that...what the heck was wrong with Jon and Dany???? Why were they just flying around in the air, barely using the dragon fire to help? That annoyed me so much! I feel like they could have helped a lot more.
Anyway, let's fast foward to the retreat. I thought the army (I forget their name) protecting the retreat was so brave. Now we're gonna get into the heavy stuff. Seeing little Lyanna Mormont fight her hardest and charge at the giant and kill him was so heartbreaking. I hated seeing her get crushed; she was a true hero. Seeing the Hound scared and hiding from all the fire and chaos broke my heart too. When his friend pointed out Arya fleeing from whitewalkers and the Hound jumped into action, I cried. It's so sweet how much he cares about Arya, like she's his daughter or something.
This is the part I cried hardest at: when the undead in the crypt broke out and started killing the women and children, so everyone else tried to hide. Seeing Sansa and Tyrion hiding together and him gently kissing her hand, TORE ME APART! It was such a tender, touching moment that I didn't know I needed but I'm so glad they included that.
And finally, the best and most badass part: Theon sacrificing himself for Bran (RIP), Bran staring the Night King dead in the eye, and then little Arya leaping through the air and stabbing the Night King to death. Yippee! I was so proud of all the Stark kids :') And the way the episode ended with Melisandre wandering outside toward dawn's light and crumbling to dust was a nice, poetic touch.
Overall, I really loved that episode. It nearly gave me a heart attack, but it was well worth it. Now, to see how the rest of the show ends.
