Mini Reviews of Some Library Lit Fic Books

Hiya bookworms! Happy Fall/Autumn/October/Spooky Season! My favorite time of year, yippee! I've been doing a lot of reading this beautiful time of year, especially outside in the sun now that it's starting to cool down and the air smells so good! I've been checking out a TON of literary fiction from the library. Here's a little stack that I finished recently, let's get into it and do some mini reviews, shall we?

Literary Fiction Books That I Ended Up Buying

So, I started A Touch of Jen and I was so amused by it that I bought the ebook when it went on sale. I haven't finished it but I can tell this is going to be such a weirdly hilarious book. I only got a few chapters into it but the basic premise is a boyfriend and girlfriend become obsessed with the boyfriend's old crush/coworker. They all become reunited and this mysterious ex-coworker invites the couple to their beach house where shenanigans ensue. It's written very funny, I enjoy it! Another book in the pile I am buying is Salt Slow. This is a collection of short stories and I read the first two stories, was blown away, and added a physical copy to my Amazon cart lol! I just have to have this book and I'll be doing a full review on how amazing it is when I'm done.

Lit Fic Mini Reviews

Aesthetica by Allie Rowbottom was such an interesting book and very insightful. It's set in the near future and our main character used to be a famous Instagram model "back in the day". She's now kinda washed up, is dealing with poor self image and struggling with aging, haunted by memories of her modeling days and her sick mother, and she's waiting to get a very famous and highly potentially deadly surgery called Aesthetica. This procedure removes all traces of past surgeries, treatments and the like from your face so you just look like you. The main character wants to start fresh and finally be herself after years of not. This book has great commentary on misogyny, unrealistic beauty standards, Me Too movement, and just how damn hard it is to be a woman in this day and age. Major trigger warnings for rape, parental death, and body dysmorphia. I gave this 4 stars because I really enjoyed it, it was a quick read, made me ponder the topics at hand, but it did make me sort of sad at the resolution.

I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness by Claire Vaye Watkins was a trip! I kinda loved it, was very confused, lost my way a few times, but enjoyed the wild ride. This is about a woman who is struggling with post partum depression and finding herself after motherhood. She's a creative writing professor and author and is on a business trip when she finds herself out in her hometown area, the desert area between California and Reno, Nevada. The book is about her confronting her past there, filled with demons and ghosts alike, healing family curses and generational trauma, and getting back in touch with herself. I'll be honest, the writing was somewhat confusing for certain parts of the book; like I got LOST y'all, but I really enjoyed the whole ride. If you go into it to just enjoy the vibes of the desert and meeting strange characters, you'll love it. But if you want a strictly linear and coherent plot, skip this. I gave it 4 stars!

Honey Girl by Morgan Rogers was such a beautiful book. I was stunned to learn this is the author's debut. And I adored it. This is so wholesome without being cheesy or annoying, so sweet and beautifully loving, the book gives you a big warm hug and tells you it's going to be okay. At least it did for me! It's about a young woman in Portland, Oregon who has just graduated with her PHD in Astronomy (I have such a love for that subject so this drew me in right away). She celebrates in Las Vegas with her best friends but wakes up the next day married to her beautiful wife, a woman who she only met last night. From there the journey begins about her finding herself, her purpose, her strength, and what she wants to do and who she wants to be. This book deals with sooo many important topics including, being queer, being biracial/a minority, dealing with family expectations, coming of age, mental health, forgiveness, understanding, I could go on. It's so beautifully written. And y'all if you enjoy the found family trope, then this is for YOU! It's full of it and it's beautiful to read about. I gave this book a full five stars and I really hope you check it out and read it. Love! A very diverse book as well, yay!

That concludes my mini reviews and those were all the books in my stack. I hope y'all check some of these great reads out! Let me know if you do and/or give me some other lit fic recs, I'd love that! Happy Reading until next time!
