The Spanish Princess & Other Ramblings

Hey y'all! Today I thought I'd ramble about my thoughts of the first episode of the Spanish Princess (which is on Starz). If y'all didn't know, this show is based on Phillipa Gregory's book, The Constant Princess. Why do I know that? OH just because I was the biggest geek ever as a teenager for anything related to the Tudors. And if you're into historical fiction, you know Phillipa Gregory is Queen of Tudor Historical Fiction. So needless to say, I was super excited for this show. I'm not AS obsessed with the Tudors now, but I'm still a geek for 'em.

So, let's start with the things I liked about the show. I love how they showed a glimpse of Katherine's mother, Queen Isabella being a badass, as usual. Now that's another show they need to make, Isabella was AWESOME! But that's for another day. I love how they showed Katherine's home and how pretty and advanced everything was. Doo doo doo, they marched across Spain and then set sail for the ocean. Sailed to England, bam! She's there.

So, the Duke of Buckingham (I think) is the guy welcoming Katherine to England. He's very pompous and kinda leers over one of the ladies in waiting. Katherine puts him in his place and continues to be her sassy feisty self, which I love. She was raised from a baby to be a Queen and man, does she own that. Doo doo doo, they go to Margaret Poole's house (I think) and the Katherine shuts everyone down for her siesta! Lol. Margaret is pissed because her brother (I think) was killed off so Katherine's alliance could happen. Long story.

SO, King Henry VII is SUPER excited Katherine is here and barges into her room which she verbally b*tch slaps him for. Satisfied that she's beautiful, Henry leaves and then doo doo doo, she eventually meets Arthur. Who, she's expecting to instantly fall in love with because they've been writing steamy letters to one another. Well, lady, get ready for disappointment because Arthur is a big loser with no personality and a terrible haircut. Katherine quickly finds out he didn't write anything to her so she's freaking out about who did?!

Enter: Henry the freaking Eighth. He's tall, handsome, (but not exactly how I picture Henry), and full of that dangerous confidence. He whispers to her something from the letters that it turns out, HE WROTE! So now we have this underlying tension between Katherine and Henry, even right before he walks her down the aisle to marry boring Arthur. THE END.

I really liked it and I like how it shows young Henry still being all cocky and seductive. I can't wait to see what happens next (we all know Arthur's gonna die). I love how strong and sassy Katherine is and I am excited to see her and Henry interact more. I'll definitely be watching!

Some other Philippa Gregory books you should read: the infamous The Other Boleyn Girl which they made into a passable movie, but I want a good t.v. show. The Boleyn Inheritance is about the women that came after Anne, which was pretty good too. We don't hear too much about them, so a show featuring all of them would be cool.

So, yeah, if you like the Tudors, historical fiction, or Phillipa Gregory, I think you'll love this!
