The Best Horror Short Story By An Unlikely Author & A Few Other Short Story Reviews

Hellooo bookworms! Today I have several mini reviews of some short stories I've been reading, almost all through Kindle Unlimited, so if you have KU, please do pick these up to read! They've all been delightful, spoiler alert lol. Let's get into it!

Off Season Short Story Review

Today I am reviewing the ebook only, horror short story by the Queen, Jennifer Weiner!!! Now, if you've been in the book world for awhile, you've probably heard of Jennifer Weiner. She's one of the Queens of women's fiction and beach reads. I love her books. So, when I found out she wrote a horror/thriller short story I literally jumped to get my kindle and download it! This book isn't on KU but it's only $2 and well worth it I'd say.

I need to preface my gushing review by warning that this book has awful reviews on Goodreads. I mean people HATED this book. But me? I loved it!!! And I'll tell y'all why right now! Let's get into it!

This book is about a down-on-her-luck author who is so very much wanting success for her books and herself. She emails a charming and handsome, powerful and famous book editor for help and guess what? he emails her back, wanting to meet with her and set forward the process of working with her. The creepiness begins from there. I really just want to give the most minimum of details because I think it's best going into this book blind.

All I'll say is if you like books with the tropes of "Art Demands Sacrifice" *hint hint*, deals with the Devil himself, and be very careful what you wish for, then chances are you'll enjoy this book. However, if you're looking for a horror book that holds your hand, coddling you, explaining to you every single little horrible thing...then this not for you. You kinda have to read between the lines and be satisfied with an ending that doesn't spell everything out to ya. If you enjoy some nuance, you'll love it. If not, glide on by. I thoroughly enjoyed the ending, made my own conclusions, and left very happy. Give it a chance for Halloween, maybe you'll like it, who knows? Full 5 stars from me!

The Wedding Setup: A Short Story

This is a delightful short story romance by Sonali Dev. If you're looking for an emotional, hard hitting, second chance romance, with lots of culture and love, check this out! I was impressed by how much the author fit into this short story without it feeling too much and too stuffed. I gave it 4 stars and would love to see more of these characters in a novel. I just didn't get to connect with the couple right away, but that's hard to do in a short story, so really I'll give this 4.5 stars.

The Bookstore Sisters by Alice Hoffman

You read that right, Alice Hoffman of Practical Magic greatness wrote this short story. I was so excited to read this since I've never read anything by her but know of her of course. And wow I was not disappointed. Absolutely loved this short story. Set by the coast of Maine in a little seaside town, I was enchanted. It's about two estranged sisters reuniting amidst a tragic time, wounds healing, second chance romance with a fisherman in town, a funny niece and pet dog, lots and lots of books and some yummy, scrumptious desserts. This short story was good for the soul, highly recommend it! Full five stars!

Those are the short stories that I have had the pleasure of reading recently. I wish short stories were more popular, let's all gather and chant "More Short Stories" to the publishers and authors out there so they know they're wanted. Heehee, instead I'll just keep looking for them on my kindle and reviewing them each week! I hope y'all enjoyed and are having a marvelous day! Until next time,
Alette.
